AFA's club disaffiliation

Posted by John Hickey on

There is no worse outcome to the end of a season than relegation.. or is there? In Argentina's 4th division, known as the Primera C, finishing last doesn't lead to getting sent to a 5th tier, it leads to disaffiliation form the federation.

The entire Argentine football pyramid has been going through a restructuring in recent years in order to take as many clubs as possible out of amateurism and give them a stable yearlong calendar. These changes started with the expansion of the top tier to 30 clubs, and most recently made their way down to the 4th tier.

The Primera C features a total of 27 clubs separated into 2 groups. The clubs that finish last in each group face each other in a playout match to stay in the 4th tier. The loser of this match then has to face the champion of the fully amateur 5th division and in case of a subsequent lose the club is disaffiliated from AFA. What does this mean exactly? A full year without being able to play an official match.

The consequences seem unnecessarily harsh but it is undeniable that watching a match where a clubs affiliation is on the line has to be extremely exiting.
