Barbados x Grenada: The Most Bizarre Match Ever

Posted by John Hickey on

The scenario is as follows: It is the 1994 CONCACAF Caribbean Cup qualification round, Barbados and Grenada face each other on the last match of their group. Grenada is first in the group and Barbados needs to win by a goal difference of 2 to qualify.

The match was progressing in a routinely fashion, Barbados scored the two goal it needed but at the 83rd minute Grenada got one back and that's where things got weird. The rules of this qualifying tournament stated that tied games went to overtime, and goals in overtime were worth double. This created a circumstance where Barbados figured it was better to score an own goal, take the game to overtime, and try to get a goal worth 2 in those additional 30 minutes instead of trying to score the 3rd goal in the few minutes left.

At this point what the fans in the stadium were witnessing was a team trying to score an own goal, and the opposition trying to prevent them from doing so. Absolutely insane.

At the end Barbados's plan worked, they scored the own goal, tied the game 2-2, took it to overtime, and in overtime scored a goal to win 4-2 and qualify. Because this was a low-profile match, the aftermath of this bizarre match was underwhelming and it didn't get a lot of coverage. Either way, FIFA reviewed the case but decided not to punish the teams since they were legitimately trying to win given the tournament rules. CONCACAF has since gotten rid of those strange rules and they were never implemented again.
