DJK Florsheim - A Real Family Club

Posted by John Hickey on

Around 12 years ago the Kurtanovic family moved from Serbia to the small German town of Florsheim am Main in big numbers. The teenagers of the Kurtanovic family immediately started playing for the youth team of the local club DJK Florsheim 2, who's professional team at that time played in the 5th tier of the German soccer pyramid.

Eventually they grew up, left for college and started careers, but during the Summer of 2024 their lives would change. Haris Kurtanovic was invited to take over the management of the club, who now found itself in the 10th division and in a deep financial crisis.

Due to his childhood ties Haris accepted and invited his entire family to be part of the roster, the people he trusted the most. So during the 2024/25 season Florsheim managed to field eleven players named Kurtanovic, plus the coach and plus 3 more on the bench.

This curious case first caught the attention of the opposing teams who often thought Kurtanovic was a sponsor due to the fact that it's on every jersey. It's not usually until a substitution is made that they realize it's actually the name of every player they're facing.

With time this story also caught the attention of eyes beyond the field. The novelty began to be told on German news, which then lead to bigger teams wanting to organize friendlies and new sponsorships that weren't businesses owned by the Kurtanovic family.

The plan is to climb back up the German ranks at least to where the club used to be a decade ago, and if anyone is worried that Florsheim will lose its identity in the process Haris assures everyone that won't happen. According to him there are 3 more Kurtanovic arriving from Serbia plus a couple more in the youth academy.

With these prospects in the horizon it seems like DJK Florsheim 2 and the Kurtanovic family will continue to be one.
