Kaiser Chiefs, indie rock band from Leeds, has an interesting connection to African soccer. More specifically, as the name suggests, with the South African giant Kaizer Chiefs FC.
The band was formed in 1996 with the name Runston Parva, after a small village in Yorkshire, and later got shortened to just Parva. In 2003 however, due to complications with record labels, the band decided to they needed a complete rebrand. The band members were huge Leeds United fans and at that time the club legend was Lucas Radebe.
Radebe was playing his 10th consecutive season for Leeds, becoming both team captain for his club and the South African national team. The young band, known as Parva at this point, always liked the name of the club that Lucas Radebe originated from: Kaizer Chiefs FC.
The name stuck and, by coincidence or not, the band took off. So much so that the story eventually reached South Africa and a friendly match was organized. In 2008 the band Kaiser Chiefs flew down to Johannesburg to play against the Kaizer Chiefs. The 6v6 game featured all six of the band member against a combination of past and present Kaizer Chiefs players, including Lucas Radebe himself who was retired at that point.
Final score: Kaizer Chiefs 4 - 2 Kaiser Chiefs.
