OFC Professional League

Posted by John Hickey on

The OFC (Oceania Football Federation) is the only one in the world without a single fully professional club. Australia is geographically part of the region but moved to the Asian federation in 2006. New Zealand has two professional clubs, Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix, but they participate in the Australian A-League. As it stands the entire continental federation is either fully amateur or semi-amateur, but this seems like it's about to change thanks to the proposed OFC Professional League.

The league was first proposed in 2019 and set to start in 2021 but got postponed to 2026 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The idea is to start with 8 professional teams from the island nations as well as some Australian clubs invited as guests. By professionalizing the clubs and creating a serious tournament the OFC hopes not only to generate more revenue but also develop local talent to to be sold across the world and strengthen the national teams.

One of the biggest concerns for the league is cost of travel, after all the distances between islands can be enormous. For example a flight from the Marshall Islands to New Zealand is over 6 hours, or from Sydney to Samoa is almost 7 hours. To deal with this issue the plan is to make it a travel league, having all 8 teams travel together to a certain city and playing multiple games at a time.

The OFC Professional League will not substitute local leagues nor the OFC Champions League, instead it will just be another layer within pyramid. It will, however, serve as Oceania's qualifying path for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the FIFA Clube World Cup.

Raising sufficient capital to reach professional status is still the biggest hurdle for the clubs to make this project a reality, but if that gets resolved then we'll be seeing an entire region of the world entering a new era in soccer.
