Nothing says Adidas like its' iconic three stripes, it's what most distinguishes it from other brands and what allows anyone to spot it miles away. Despite the three stripes being the main visual characteristic of the brand, believe it or not, Adidas was once forced to make a 2 stripe jersey.

In the 1974 World Cup the Dutch national team had one of the greatest squads on the planet. Their jerseys were manufactured by Adidas, but their star player Johan Cruyff was sponsored by Puma. At this time Nike was still out of the picture in the world of soccer, Adidas and Puma were the two giants that divided fans. Because of this rivalry Cruyff did not want to play in an Adidas jersey, so the brand was forced to create a different kit just for him.
The result? While the other 11 Dutch players wore the tradition orange jersey with 3 black stripes on the sleeves Cruyff's jersey only had 2. This was only possible because at the time sponsorship deals were far less strict as well as FIFA's rules regarding uniforms. Either was it was a creative solution that worked for all parties involved.
